Glug: 24.02.11 – Things to Make & Do
Glug – Things to Make & Do from Glug on Vimeo.
I’m so very proud of our event last Thursday at Cargo. It went down like an absolute storm! We had live illustration, limited edition Mr Smith posters, AMAZING speakers talking about craft, jumpers, furniture, last in a line of makers, Indian taxi driver art, botching furniture in the woods in Milan, art and urban planning and all sorts. It was a total road block. Thanks to everyone who worked with me & Natalie to make it such a great evening!
Times Square: art instead of ads
Open My Glade by Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist just goes to show that a bit of humour, in a space traditionally associated with corporate push messages, goes a long way. For once you simply just want to watch.
Nike 78 exhibition
Granted, I may have had a taste bypass but I’m loving these Nike painted cloggs created by Johnny Kelly for Nike78.
VIP Art Fair – 100% online
The world contemporary art fair scene is big business, HUGE in fact. The key fairs generate the lion’s share of a gallery’s annual revenue. So here we have it, ‘Viewing in Private’…what looks like a strong format for an online only art fair. Certainly they’ve attracted the most prestigious galleries from all corners of the art-loving earth, and therefore the most revered artists. But will it be a success?
It’s good to see the art world finally catching up with modern tech. The optimum digital display of art is something that has alluded the contemporary art world. Personally, I think this comes from an unwillingness to communicate with a broader audience and a lack of strategic digital expertise in the art world. I would love to see more of this calculated experimenting going on. The fair ends at the end of this month. Success or not? The jury’s out. Lets hope the organisers keep developing it.
Somerset House & Pick Me Up 2011
Hats off to the folk at Somerset House, they’re fashion alignment strategy has been uber smart and they’ve successfully carved out a niche for themselves. London cultural programming is rich & varied but Somerset House often surprise and never disappoint. I’m already looking forward to this year’s Pick Me Up graphic design event. A great day out!

Why people share content and spread ideas
As a complement to Seth Godin’s ‘Why I Spread Your Idea’, The Social Times identifies 7 specific factors that motivate people to share content with their social networks:
Laughter (or, according to Godin, ‘because it’s funny and laughing alone is no fun’)
Inspiration (comparable to Godin’s ‘I spread your idea because I’m in awe of your art and the only way I can repay you is to share that art with others)
Cuteness (not sure Godin said anything related to ‘cute’)
Originality (’because your idea says something that I have trouble saying directly’)
Shock (’because it’s fun to make another teen snicker about prurient stuff we’re not supposed to see’)
Surprise (’because I feel smart alerting others to what I discovered)
Nostalgia (Godin doesn’t pose a reason that directly speaks to nostalgia for a shared experience, so we’ll take the liberty of saying ‘I spread your idea because it reminds me that we’re connected – we shared an experience in the past)
We’re all in the business of garnering support for our ideas – whether they’re shared via social media, or shared within our diverse tribes (the office, school, our industry, etc.).
A sense for the reasons for why we as humans get behind an idea and encourage others to do the same helps us understand what is likelier to get us recognized and extended – as both brand builders and individuals.
Thanks PSFK.
I want to be an astronaut
Space travel is getting closer and closer. I helped launch Virgin Galactic when I was at Start Creative yonks ago, now they’re another milestone nearer to making it happen. Amazing.
